What is hypnotherapy?

……and what is it not?

Hypnotherapy is an evidence-based, complementary therapy that can help individuals access their inner resources to improve well-being, manage stress, and alter habits or thought patterns.

I use clinical hypnotherapy alongside Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques and education about anxiety to help clients understand the link between anxiety and performance. This approach allows individuals to manage anxious thoughts and feelings more effectively, so they can perform at their full potential.

Research shows that hypnotherapy can be highly effective for anxiety-related issues. It works by guiding you into a natural, focused state of awareness—similar to being absorbed in a book, film, or daydream. In this state, your mind becomes more open to positive suggestions, enabling you to replace unhelpful thought patterns with more constructive ones.

A common misconception is that hypnosis means losing control, but in reality, you remain fully aware and in charge throughout. Hypnotherapy is not stage hypnosis; it cannot make you do anything against your will. Instead, it is a process that empowers you to reframe how you respond to stress and anxiety, building resilience, focus, and confidence.

In performance coaching, this is especially valuable. Whether you’re an athlete, student, professional, or performer, hypnotherapy can help you:

  • Reduce performance anxiety and nerves

  • Improve concentration and focus

  • Strengthen self-belief and confidence

  • Develop coping strategies under pressure

  • Access a calmer, more resourceful state of mind when it matters most

Hypnosis is a collaborative process between you and your therapist. Together, we use your own mind and imagination to create positive change. To reinforce progress, you will be asked to practise techniques between sessions.

The goal is to help you manage anxiety effectively and perform at your best, while supporting your overall wellbeing. Sessions are always tailored to your individual needs and delivered in a safe, professional environment.
